DEMOCRACY IN ACTION! RDUTC Student Board election 2018
On Friday 9th March students in Year 10 took part in the election to select members for the RDUTC Student Board. Over the previous two weeks a total of thirteen student candidates had canvassed for support from their peers with the aim of gaining a seat on the student board.
Vice-Principal Mark Ollerenshaw said “The election has been a fabulous success. The aim was to make the process as real as possible. The students involved had to register as an official candidate, draw-up an election manifesto and then campaign to secure votes. We set up an official Polling Station in the Smith & Nephew Conference Centre where the students exercised their democratic right to vote”. Mark went on to say “The RDUTC Student Board will be an integral part of the school and will give the students a voice and a direct route to SLT and Governors. We want them to play their part in the running of the school. We decided the best way to expose students to Democracy, one of the Fundamental British Values, was for them to experience it for themselves”.
Election fever continues this week as Year 12 students George Mellonby and Ellie Colclough battle it out for the coveted position of Chair of the Student Board. Polling Day is Friday 16th March.
