Another bumper intake as new students join Ron Dearing UTC
Almost 250 more students joined the Ron Dearing UTC family today in another bumper intake for Hull’s employer-led school.
Yet again demand has outstripped available places, despite us increasing the number of places in Year 10 by 20 to 140. Even with the increased numbers, 50 students have had to go on the waiting list for places.
In Year 12 we have responded to the strong demand for places by increasing admission numbers to 105 from the planned 90, including places available on a new Level 3 Engineering course we have added to the curriculum over the summer.
Ron Dearing UTC opened last year with 220 students across Years 10 and 12, 70 students more than the target set for us by the Department for Education (DfE). We now have 465 students which is 105 students more than our DfE target. We are, therefore, well on track to reach our full capacity of 600 students by 2020.
Principal Sarah Pashley said: “We’re excited to be starting the new school year with more than twice as many students as last September.
“Although it’s unfortunate and unavoidable that some applicants have been disappointed, we’re delighted that so many students and their parents are attracted by our employer-led education model.
“We firmly believe that our revolutionary approach to education, which is very different from that available elsewhere in our region, will pay huge dividends in terms of producing young people with the academic, technical and employability skills that industry is crying out for.
“I would like to wish a very warm welcome to our new students and also our highly talented new staff. I also want to welcome back all of our amazing students and staff who started with us last year and who have become fantastic ambassadors for our school. I can’t wait to see what we will all achieve together over the next academic year.”
Applications will open soon to join Ron Dearing UTC in Year 10 and Year 12 in September 2019. The first Open Evening is on October 4. For further information and to download our online application forms please visit our website here.
