The new school year means welcoming new students to the Ron Dearing UTC community, but it also means welcoming new staff too!
Ron Dearing has recently welcomed experienced educator Kathy Lee to its English department.
Kathy joins as a Lead Practitioner and will be teaching GCSE English, working particularly closely with high-attaining students to help them reach their full potential.
Hull born and bred, Kathy has a wealth of teaching experience having spent over two decades working in secondary schools across the city.
Kathy began her teaching journey studying a combined English Literature and Language degree at the University of Hull before completing her PGCE qualification.
She said: “I’m really excited to be joining Ron Dearing and contribute my years of experience to this fantastic team.
“Having worked in education for 26 years I know that as teachers we need to constantly adapt to the ever-changing cohorts of students, so I look forward to continuing to evolve and adapt to new ways of teaching, whilst continuing to challenge students to achieve their full potential.
“I’m also excited to be reuniting with several former colleagues who I worked with at my previous school, including our Head of English Sabina Abedin and Principal Sarah Pashley.”
Alongside her teaching role, Kathy also has plans to launch a student-led newspaper at the school, so watch this space!

Now you know all about Kathy’s academic credentials, but what else should students know about the new staff member?
If you’re not teaching, what will we find you doing?
I enjoying getting out in the countryside on long walks, socialising with my friends at our book club and I’ve also recently completed a women’s weightlifting course!
What is the last book you read?
I recently finished What You Are Looking for Is in the Library by Japanese author Michiko Aoyama. I really enjoyed it and have already recommended it to colleagues and my family members!
Pack up or lunch in the school canteen?
A mixture of both!
What was your favourite subject in school?
Apart from English, I really enjoyed drama and history. If I didn’t study English at university I think I would have gone to drama school.
If you could invite three people to a dinner party who would you invite and why?
My Mum, Richard III – I’d love to know if he was a goody or a baddy – and author Sue Townsend, who spoke on important political topics whilst remaining comical.
